David Rose Sand Greens champ
Nyngan’s David Rose wins NSW Sand Greens Championships on home soil
Nyngan’s David Rose was a runaway winner in the recent NSW Men’s Sand Greens Golf Championships held on his home course.
Rose shot 67 and then a course-record equalling 63 on day two to finish at six-under (130), winning by a mammoth 10 shots in the state sand greens title held at Nyngan Golf Club on Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13.
It was Rose’s second NSW Men’s Sand Greens Championship success.
Both tournament victories, in 2021 and 2024, have come on home soil at Nyngan.
Rose, 51, moved to Nyngan from Victoria when he was 12 and loves the layout on his home course.
After his first round of one-under on the par 68 Nyngan course, Rose shot a five-under second round of five under (63) for a six-under par total.
That sizzling 130 total ensured he was well clear of Finley’s Ian Armour Jnr and Michael Paterson (Binalong GC), who both shot 140 off the stick.
Nyngan’s Stephen Parry (69, 72; 141) was fourth with Narromine’s Tony Harding (72, 70; 142) in a tie for fifth place with Coolamon’s Mitchel O’Brien, also on 142.
Nyngan’s Brendan Smith (71, 74: 145) also finished in the top 10.
Rose also took out the NSW Sand Greens Teams Event title for Nyngan GC, teaming up with his son Shane and Mitchell Williams.
According to Nyngan Golf Club’s Facebook Page, they were 10 under their handicap for the weekend with another local combination in Mike Oliver, Dave Martin and Kyle Whaley, who were just one stroke behind the winners, nine-under their handicap.
Nyngan’s Graham Tomek (76, 76; 152 off the stick) played great golf all weekend to finish 10 strokes under his 18-hole handicap (13) across the 36 holes and win both the NSW Veterans Golf Association and NSW Men’s Sand Greens Championships nett winner titles (126).
Tomek won on a countback from Cobar’s Craig Dillon after Dillon led after the first round.
Aaron Bennett also flew the flag for Nyngan by winning the day two nett competition, with his 77 off the stick earning him a nett score of 63 on the Sunday.
The NSW Men’s Sand Greens Championship is open to male amateur golfers with a GA handicap of 27.4 or under.
It is played over 36-holes stroke play, 18-holes on the first day and 18-holes on the second day. This event has been running since 1979.
The Championship also incorporates the NSWVGA Sand Greens Championship, the Junior Sand Greens Champion, and the NSW Sand Greens Teams Event.
The Junior Sand Greens Championship was again won by Warren’s Joey Walker (80, 76; 156).
The NSW Veterans Sand Greens Championship is held in conjunction with the NSW Men’s Sand Greens titles.
Brian Jenner (Kew Golf Club) won this Championship by five strokes after shooting 144 across the 36 holes. Jenner is formerly of Nyngan and enjoyed the trip back to his old home.
Narromine’s Robert Williams (70, 79; 149) was second in the veterans category.
