Nyngan High School celebrated its 50th anniversary last week with a dinner at the Nyngan RSL and Civic Club attended by past students, teachers, parents, and friends. The celebrations commenced earlier in the day with a tour of the school which was established in 1974. Prior to its opening 50 years ago, the Nyngan Public School had provided courses for secondary students.

Recently retired member of staff, Veronica Bourke, had been at the school from the start and was invited to give her recollections at the dinner. Veronica’s grandson and former student Jack Buchanan, who was dux of the school in 2022 and is currently studying software engineering at the University of NSW, was the guest speaker. Another former student, Royden Donoghue, provided the entertainment for the night and had the guests out of their seats and dancing.

The celebrations were organised by the NHS Parents and Citizens 50th anniversary committee which included principal Benn Wright, Tanya Buchanan, Donna Smith, Noelene Walsh, Sharon Bonello, Neralie Quarmby, and Helen Crosland. A special anniversary cake, made by Heavenly Scent Cake Decorating in Narromine, was cut by the current school captains Meg Richards, Elle Montgomery, and Meg Meldrum as well as former student Michelle Simpson, and Veronica Bourke.

Another former student, Angela Pumpa, made anniversary cookies to accompany it.
