World Kindness Day was celebrated at the Nyngan Multi-Purpose Health Service (MPHS) with a community bake-off on Thursday, November 13, with around 60 community members enjoying the array of cakes, biscuits and slices for morning tea.

It was the first time the MPHS has held the event, but judging by its success, it may possibly become a permanent calendar fixture.

Manager Jenny Griffiths said there were 25 entries in the baking competition, which was judged by herself, with Rhonda Baden, Di Hughes and Sue Bourke from the Nyngan Hospital Auxiliary.

Awards were presented in several different categories. Nyngan High School student Sophie Walsh was the youngest baker; and staff member MJ created the most unusual dish.

Community nurse Saovanee Cook produced a chocolate creation to win the best cake; Sue Bartley’s custard cream biscuits with passionfruit icing were the best biscuits; and Judy Read won the slice division.

The sponge cake prize was possibly the most coveted, and went to Jenny Holmes.

Wendy Clissold won the dessert section with a lemon meringue cheesecake.

In honour of World Kindness Day, Mrs Griffiths also presented special kindness gifts to Rhonda Baden – who baked on behalf of four aged care residents – and Sue Bourke, who works tirelessly to ensure the residents are content and comfortable.

Following the award presentation the residents, staff and members of the community were able to sample the entries themselves, with a large morning tea in dining room.
